Back in 2014, lawyer directory website Avvo rolled out Avvo Advisor, a service that allows a potential client to pay a flat fee of $39 to talk to an attorney for 15 minutes. Now, the company is expanding its reach even further beyond legal advice with a pilot program that will offer fixed-fee legal services.
Avvo Legal Services won’t be immediately available in Maryland — according to the ABA Journal, it’s starting out in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix — but will begin launching in additional markets next month. (The company did not disclose which cities it plans to expand to.)
As for the services it will offer, the list includes filing for an uncontested divorce, for which the attorney would receive the full $995 legal fee, applying for U.S. citizenship (a $595 fee) and creating a business contract (a $399 fee).
Attorneys who are interested in joining Avvo’s network of lawyers can sign up online. They won’t have to pay to join, but must pay a marketing fee for each service they complete through the system.
When a potential client purchases a particular service through the site, they will also choose an attorney to work with, who can accept or decline the client after a 30-minute introductory phone call. Once a month, Avvo will send the attorney his or her earnings for the previous month and, to avoid fee-splitting issues, the marketing fee will be charged in a separate transaction.
