Johns Hopkins University is launching a new research center to develop innovative healthcare technology and systems.
The Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare will be part of the university’s Whiting School of Engineering, and support joint projects between engineers and clinicians with three principal areas of focus: data analytics, systems design and analysis, and technology and devices, the university announced this week.
The center will provide resources to support current research efforts — including the development of a video game to help stroke patients recover, an algorithm that helps identify patients facing the greatest risk of septic shock — and new collaborations, according to the university.
Whiting School alum John C. Malone, who has already endowed a new building and several professorships at the university, is also supporting the new center.
“Johns Hopkins is uniquely positioned for engineering-based innovation in healthcare because of our history and culture of collaboration, combined with a world-renowned hospital system and engineering school,” Ed Schlesinger, dean of the Whiting School, said in a statement. “We are so very grateful of Dr. Malone’s continued support of our mission.”
