Rep. Cummings seeks progress on Baltimore rail station redevelopment

Rep. Elijah Cummings is pushing for Amtrak officials to make progress on the long awaited redevelopment of Baltimore’s Penn Station.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Amtrak CEO Joseph Boardman said Friday that nine firms are interested in the project, but it remains unclear when it would be completed.

Amtrak wants to redevelop the upper floors of the station and nearby land and to make other improvements.

Cummings told Boardman that he’s frustrated at the lack of progress. He said Baltimore needs the station “to be an economic engine.”

His remarks came during a hearing of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Boardman said Amtrak has spent $22 million on improvements at the station since 2010 and plans to spend another $3 million this year.
