Curry shoe designer leaves Under Armour for Nike

The top designer of some of Under Armour’s most popular shoes is returning to rival Nike.

Dave Dombrow, the Baltimore-based brand’s senior vice president of design, helped develop signature products for Stephen Curry and Cam Newton.

The news was first reported by footwear news site Nice Kicks.

Dombrow joined the Under Armour in 2010 and was in charge of all footwear and accessory design at the company. He previously worked for Puma and was a designer for Nike from 2000 to 2003, Footwear News reported.

Industry insiders see this as a big shake-up as Under Armour as the brand tries to get a bigger bite out of the athletic footwear market. In the fourth quarter of 2015, Under Armour’s shoe sales were up 95 percent, largely propelled by the popularity of the Curry basketball shoe, which has been an international success.

Under Armour stock took a dip on Tuesday, the day after the news broke about Dombrow’s exit.
