Sagamore’s Fells Point Rec Pier hotel announces brand

The Fells Point Recreation Pier hotel will be the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore and is scheduled to open next year.

The hotel is a collaboration between Sagamore Development Co., which is backed by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, and California-based Pendry Hotels. It will be Pendry’s first East Coast hotel; Pendry’s first hotel is slated to open later this year in San Diego.

Sagamore started rehabbing the historic recreation pier, which dates back to 1914, more than a year ago. Baltimore approved the sale of the long vacant property to Sagamore for $3.4 million in 2014.

“I think the building, we thought about the best use for the buildings. There’s lots of things, different things, that we contemplated. At the end of the day … when we bring our creative in, and our artists from throughout world, everyone wants to stay in Fells Point,” Plank said during a ceremony celebrating the rehab of the project last year. “There’s some great restaurants and hotels here, but we thought there was really an ability for us to put all those pieces together and put sort of the angle and aspect of the Baltimore that I’ve seen mixed with the Fells Point that has already been here.”

The 116,000-square-foot luxury hotel will feature a three-meal restaurant, a whiskey bar and an outdoor pool, according to a news release.

In 2010, developer J. Joseph Clarke bought the property from the city for $300,000 with the idea of redeveloping it as hotel. Clarke was never able to bring that idea to fruition.

Before sitting vacant the recreation pier was used as a stand-in for police headquarters in the television show, “Homicide: Life on the Street.”
