2 sewage spills send 8,500 gallons into Deep Creek Lake

OAKLAND — Garrett County officials say two separate spills sent about 8,500 gallons of raw sewage into Deep Creek Lake in far western Maryland.
County Administrator Kevin Null said in a statement Monday that a spill occurred Sunday morning about two miles southwest of McHenry. The statement says a leaking service line spilled about 2,500 gallons into a ditch, causing it to flow into an adjacent stream and into the lake.
The county government says another spill estimated at 6,000 gallons occurred Friday in the McHenry area. The statement says heavy rain washed out a culvert pipe under Glendale Road, causing a break in a 6-inch sewer line.
Null says notices urging people to avoid the water have been posted, and the water quality is being monitored.
