Hogan names new DGS secretary

Gov. Larry Hogan Tuesday announced the appointment of a new Department of General Services secretary. He didn’t have to look far to find a candidate.

Ellington Churchill, Jr., 46, the deputy secretary of Housing and Community Development, has been tapped to fill the vacancy left by Gail Bassette, who after 18 months on the job resigned effective immediately July 1.

The Department of General Services is responsible for maintaining state facilities as well as handling supplies and equipment procurement for the state.

Prior to joining the administration in September 2015, Churchill was a project manager for Lewis Contractors. He holds a Bachelors Degree in architecture and a Master’s degree in construction management. He is also the husband of Shareese Churchill, a spokeswoman for governor since Hogan was sworn-in. The couple lives in Anne Arundel County with their two daughters.

Ellington Churchill’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the state Senate when it reconvenes in January.
