ANNAPOLIS — Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski says Hillary Clinton wants to break down all the barriers to opportunity.

Mikulski submitted Clinton’s name for the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday at the party’s convention in Philadelphia to make her the first woman to lead a major party into a White House race.

Mikulski, who is the longest-serving woman in the history of Congress, says she is submitting Clinton’s name on behalf of all women who’ve broken barriers for others, and with an eye toward the barriers still ahead.

The senator says Clinton will fight for day-to-day needs and long-range needs of the country. She says she’ll “fight for the macro issues and the macaroni and cheese issues.”

Mikulski is retiring at the end of her fifth six-year term.
