BALTIMORE — More than 250 immigrants in Maryland could lose their commercial driver’s licenses after an audit found that the state Motor Vehicle Administration mistakenly issued them the permits.
The Washington Post reports that the MVA has warned hundreds of commercial drivers that their licenses would be canceled unless they proved their citizenship within 30 days.
The MVA sent most of the notices to drivers who have work permits through a federal “Temporary Protected Status” program, which gives immigrants permission to work in the United States. The notices told the drivers that the agency had not received lawful permanent residence documents from them.
MVA spokesman Buel Young says the agency is trying to see if there are different commercial licenses that could be issued to the immigrants.
