The National Aquarium recently celebrated its 35th anniversary with a special VIP party Aug. 9 for more than 200 guests at Pier 4 behind the dolphin fountain on Schaefer Plaza in Baltimore. Many Baltimore notables were on hand, including members of the board of directors, corporate members, donors, government officials and community leaders. to help aquarium officials celebrate the milestone event with cocktails and appetizers.

The aquarium opened its doors for the first time Aug. 8, 1981 and welcomed 8,400 guests. Three and a half decades later, the nonprofit aquatic education and conservation organization has welcomed more than 50 million guests and is home to almost 20,000 animals.

Since opening 35 years ago, the organization has evolved from a visitor attraction to a conservation organization that operates a world-class aquarium. Today, the National Aquarium acts on its mission through award-winning exhibits, educational conservation initiatives and a state-of-the-art animal rescue program.
