Amazon intends to open a 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center in North East in Cecil County and create 700 jobs, according to Maryland’s Commerce Department.
The newest fulfillment center represents the online retail giant’s third facility in Maryland.
“We’re excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in North East, creating hundreds of full-time jobs that offer wages 30 percent higher than traditional retail stores and include comprehensive benefits on day one, bonuses and stock awards,” Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations, said in a statement. “Maryland has an incredible workforce, and we are so happy to have this opportunity to expand in the state to serve customers.”
Employees at the fulfillment center will package and ship large items such as televisions, kayaks and patio furniture. The new facility is a joint venture between Trammell Crow Co. and Diamond Realty Investments.
The Baltimore areas industrial market continued its hot performance through the end of 2016. E-commerce firms, such as Amazon, continue to drive demand for warehouse and distribution space particularly in the Interstate 95 corridor and around the Port of Baltimore.
