OAKLAND — The snowiest town in Maryland is postponing its annual Winter Fest because it’s too warm.

Michelle Ross of the Greater Oakland Business Association said Wednesday that the event planned for Saturday and Sunday has been pushed back a week because temperatures this weekend are forecast to hit the mid-50s.

She says Winter Fest typically draws 2,000 people to the western Maryland mountain town to enjoy ice sculptures, ice-carving demonstrations and ice bowling.

Ross says the event has been postponed just one other time in its nine-year history, also due to warm temperatures.

The region is behind on snowfall, with just 54 inches recorded this season at the nearby Wisp ski resort. The area averages more than 100 inches of snow per year.
