Benjamin H. Carney says creativity is at the heart of his success as a consumer class-action lawyer who has obtained more than $70 million in relief for his clients.
“The key to my creativity is my philosophy – doing well by doing good,” he said. “I don’t believe that I would be able to employ my creativity as successfully if I did not believe in what I was doing, and if I did not believe that my everyday work was benefiting society. I go out of my way to make sure what I am doing professionally is in line with my personal values, and does the world good.”
Carney said he has helped his clients improve their finances in many ways. “I have recovered money, eliminated substantial debts, cleared up negative credit, and obtained significant additional benefits through the class-action recoveries I have obtained,” he said. “Those recoveries have also given many people hope and restored their faith in the legal system.”
Carney, who earned his law degree in 2004 from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, has served his community through two nonprofit legal-aid organizations.
He was on the board of the Public Justice Center, which advocates of Maryland’s low-income residents in the legislatures, courts, and government agencies, from 2010 to 2016. He was elected recently to the board of directors of Civil Justice Inc., which provides legal services to low- and moderate-income state residents.
