A Massachusetts laboratory services company is planning to close an animal facility in Maryland, and 57 people are set to lose their jobs.
Charles River Laboratories Inc. is closing its facility at 8501 Progress Drive in Frederick that produces animals for use in research laboratories, beginning in March 2018 and lasting until August 2018, according to the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
A spokeswoman for Charles River Laboratories said the company decided to close the Frederick facility as part of its continuing efforts to streamline its operations and enhance efficiencies. She said the company would make sure to provide support and resources to employees seeking new jobs inside or outside of the company.
The Frederick site makes animal models used to develop new treatments; the most common animals produced there are for oncology studies, according to the company.
