The ceremonial start of construction of the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo is scheduled for Thursday.
The facility is slated to replace the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly. The new facility in Largo will serve as a teaching hospital and will absorb the certificate of need for open heart surgery.
The current facility in Cheverly is widely considered antiquated, and replacing it has been a priority of Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr.
