Maryland Legal Aid
Alexa Bertinelli admits she has a “soft spot for ‘lost causes.’” As a staff attorney for Maryland Legal Aid, she has dedicated her career to serving low-income communities, especially the LGBTQ community, that disproportionately experience poverty.
At Maryland Legal Aid, she has worked to better address the needs of LGBTQ clients, and to reform the intake process so that it is more inclusive of gender non-conforming persons.
Bertinelli is especially passionate about the work she does on housing issues, because “homelessness has a tremendous impact on a family’s economic, emotional, and physical health.” Through her general law practice, she is able to address the legal needs of her clients from a holistic approach.
Bertinelli is known to take on cases where others have said that nothing can be done.
“Through her tireless work and dogged determination, Alexa has attained numerous victories and successful outcomes for her clients. She often takes unique, novel approaches to her cases, soliciting comments from judges and opposing counsel,” says Sabrina Wear, supervising attorney at Maryland Legal Aid.
