Dr. Kelley E. Banagan, orthopaedic spine surgeon and assistant professor in the department of orthopaedics at the University of Maryland, has spent her career treating cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine conditions for adult and pediatric patients. In addition to showing leadership in pediatric spinal deformity, Banagan has proven that she can overcome adversity and discrimination, particularly in a male-dominated field.

Banagan serves as a faculty mentor to three female medical students. She was asked to be part of a women in medicine mentorship program through the University of Maryland Medical School.

While she spends her days performing surgery on some of the most challenging patients, Banagan sees her role as a chance to inspire change, educate and mentor.

“Portions of my career have been fraught with adversity and discrimination. As one of a small number of female orthopaedic spine surgeons in academic practice nationally, I see it as an obligation to inspire other females to pursue the career they so choose regardless of gender bias,” Banagan says.
