American Gene Technologies International Inc., a leading gene and cell therapy company in Rockville, received a patent covering ways of treating cancer.

Patent 9,834,790 is for treating cancer with viral vector technology. American Gene Technologies said the technology uses a patient’s own tumors to fight cancer by activating specialized cells of the immune system, called gamma delta T cells.

David Pauza, chief science officer of American Gene Technologies, said programming tumors to stimulate gamma delta T cells could treat a variety of cancers.
