Joseph Greenwald & Laake P.A. has recently added a new practice area in data privacy and cybersecurity, with a focus on compliance, government investigations and enforcement actions, data privacy litigation and transactional support, the firm announced Wednesday.

With businesses facing an increased risk of data breaches, the new practice seeks to help businesses and individual navigate the protection of sensitive digital information, the Greenbelt-based firm said.

The new practice group will be led by attorney Jason Sarfati. Sarfati is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, a professional association on information privacy and holds a CIPP/US certification (Certified Information Privacy Professional), making him well-versed in the data privacy laws that govern the private sector, the firm said.

Sarfati, in a statement, said he believes businesses should view privacy and cybersecurity as an opportunity and not a “cost-related headache.

The legal world is increasingly focusing on cybersecurity and data privacy. Last year, Towson-based Bowie & Jensen LLC expanded its cybersecurity practice. In 2016, the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law announced a new online master’s degree program in cybersecurity law.
