Battelle National Biodefense Institute, which is based at Fort Detrick, donated $50,000 to Frederick County Public Schools to be used for STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, challenge grants.

During a monthlong competition, teachers can develop STEM education ideas. If their idea is chosen, they can receive up to $5,000 to implement it.

The school system will release the challenge grant criteria on March 20. Completed grant applications are due April 20. The school system and Battelle will offer a grant writing seminar during that month.

The winners will be announced May 23 at the Frederick County Board of Education meeting.
