Managing Partner
Shawe Rosenthal LLP
As a member of the Shawe Rosenthal LLP team for more than 30 years, Gary L. Simpler enjoys the unique boutique labor and law firm atmosphere paired with local, regional and national clients. “It’s a unique opportunity for lawyers who want to practice at the highest level of labor and employment and would like to do it in a smaller setting and not a big, multi-state practice,” he said.
The University of Maryland School of Law graduate started at the firm in 1985 as an associate. Named a partner in 1991, he later became the firm’s co-managing partner with his practice mainly focusing on collective bargaining negotiations on behalf of management. Simpler is driven to be a good listener and problem solver for his clients.
Simpler has settled over 300 labor agreements without work stoppages and assisted companies and health systems in providing good working conditions and competitive wages and benefits to thousands of workers.
“Our strategy is to get a fair contract that meets the company’s needs and also addresses the employees needs,” he said noting economic situations and location are factors in how deals are reached. Simpler’s favorite part of his job is working with his clients and the union team to accomplish a good contract that allows the business to be successful.
For 20 years, Simpler has also provided pro bono labor and employment counsel to the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. He also served on their board of directors from 1997 to 2006. “I’ve always enjoyed working with symphony,” he said. “They are people who are very passionate about providing a music venue in Annapolis but one that continues to improve artistically. It is exciting to be a part of that.”
