It’s nice to get a win. But don’t let it go to your head.

My colleagues and I have had a few big wins in the last few weeks. After years of litigation, these cases have had significant decisions rendered in our clients’ favor.  The one I can share with you is the Delaware Supreme Court opinion in Eagleforce v. Campbell. I cannot explain how cool it is to see your hard work, your case authority, your record recognized by the top court of a state. It is a lawyer’s best day.

We grind every day in our cases, fighting the good fight. Mid-discovery, it is easy to get lost in the weeds. When a case is on pause for months while dispositive motions are pending or you are waiting for an appellate decision, it is easy to feel like you are making no progress. I recently described it as a hamster wheel, constantly spinning, but getting nowhere.

Then you get a decision like Eagleforce that puts all your hard work into focus. It is an incredible feeling and a great reminder of why we push so hard, work so many hours and struggle to find a work-life balance.

I was speaking with My Judge (the judges I clerked for will forever be known as “My Judge” because when we were clerking that is how we referred to our respective judges) a couple days ago and told her of our recent successes. Her response was exactly on point.

“It’s nice when you get these decisions, you feel like a real lawyer, but don’t let it go to your head,” she said.

My Judge is 100 percent right. The only reason we got to this point is because we worked our collective butts off. So, my fellow exhausted lawyers, keep the faith!
