Md. Legal Aid seeking volunteers for veterans telephone hotline

Maryland Legal Aid is looking for volunteer attorneys to staff its telephone hotline for low-income veterans.
The Joining Forces telephone hotline provides legal assistance and brief advice to low-income veterans on a range of civil legal issues. Veterans who are financially eligible and need more substantive legal representation may be referred to legal aid attorneys or volunteer attorneys, Maryland Legal Aid said in a press release.

The hotline is staffed by volunteer attorneys on Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteers can answer calls from their home or office. Detailed information, including scripts about various areas of civil law, is given to volunteers to use as a reference when assisting callers.

Maryland Legal Aid offers other support for volunteers in the event callers ask legal questions that are not in the scripts and are outside the volunteers’ expertise. An online training program is also available for volunteers who are not familiar with veterans’ issues.

“Our goal is to make sure that attorneys who volunteer for the veterans’ hotline receive the training and ongoing guidance they need to be confident when assisting clients over the phone,” said Scott Black, MLA’s Staff Attorney for Special Populations, who manages the hotline.

Attorneys interested in volunteering can sign up for available hotline shifts at https://apps.mdlab.org/JFH/.

  1. I would really like to volunteer for this service, but ai am in-house counsel and my employer will not allow it during the workday. I would love to do a “late shift” and I know that for parents of young children, it is often more sane to try to talk on the phone after they have a bath and go to bed. Can a later spot please be added even one night per week? I would even take it every week for a while, if I had to. I feel very strongly that I would like to Volunteer to help these men and women with my 29 years of experience in General Practice.
