Baltimore defense attorney Warren A. Brown is on the state comptroller’s naughty list.
In a list of the top businesses and individuals who owe the state a total of $12.7 million in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest, Brown owes the state $253,214, ranking No. 8 among individual taxpayers.
Comptroller Peter Franchot’s office publishes the names of top offenders as part of its Caught in the Web program to shame those on the list to pay what they owe.
“My Caught in the Web program highlights a small number of individuals and businesses that make a conscious effort to not pay their taxes,” said Franchot in a statement. “These people have chosen to take advantage of the benefits of this great state while thumbing their noses at the taxpayers who fulfill their legal obligations.”
Since the program’s was created in 2000, the comptroller’s office has collected more than $45 million from delinquent taxpayers whose names appeared one of these lists, the office said in a press release.
Brown could not be reached for comment, but acknowledged to WBAL-TV that while he owes taxes, he has paid plenty of federal and state taxes. He also attributed the delinquent taxes to confusion with a previous accountant and missing tax records. Brown said he has a new accountant and is trying “to put the pieces back together.”
