Philanthropy can taste as good as it feels. Now, more and more, philanthropic events are a fantastic way to expose yourself to new networks, new activities and, of course, new foods. Sometimes being charitable is as easy as attending a fun event with interesting people and trying some incredible food.
Just ask the League for People with Disabilities, which is bringing together some of Baltimore’s top chefs for a great cause. The League, which offers individuals with physical, cognitive and neurological disabilities the opportunities to gain independence through a variety of services. It serves more than 4,000 children and adults each year offering Autism Services, Camping & Recreation, Medical Day, Workforce Development, Wellness, CLUB1111, and SCALE Aphasia services.
The League is one of Maryland’s oldest nonprofit organizations but achieves its important mission through new and innovative events, such as #OMGFood.
“I first learned about The League at this event last year,” says Someya Poverni, the chairwoman of the #OMGFood event. “Now I am very involved in the cause and have a new appreciation of the amazing services they provide.”
Poverni said attending last year’s event opened her eyes to how challenging it could be to have a disability — as well as how easy it is for young professionals to get involved.
“The League has so many offerings,” she said. “Camp Greentop seems to be the happy place allowing much-needed respite. I have volunteered at CLUB1111 -a nightclub for adults held at The League the second Saturday of every month, where clubgoers can be with their friends in a safe, inclusive environment.”
Just one year into her involvement, Poverni is chairing #OMGFood and is happy to not only fundraise but volunteer.
“I feel like I make a difference,” she said. “My hope is to get more people involved, young and old.”
So come out Oct. 11 to enjoy some cocktails and great food for a great cause.
