Sexual Assault Spouse Abuse Resource Center

Luisa Caiazzo has transformed the Sexual Assault Spouse Abuse Resource Center (SARC) in Bel Air since taking over as CEO in 2006, expanding services for clients, improving the agency’s finances and focusing on building a positive work environment.

During Caiazzo’s tenure, revenue has grown 72.1 percent and net income has increased by 48.1 percent, but she’s proudest of the impact she has made with clients and employees. SARC provides many services, including counseling, legal representation, the SARC Safehouse, and a 24-hour helpline.

“Through strategic research and analysis, I have been able to identify funding sources that allow for financial stability and growing the organization,” Caiazzo said, noting she has been able to hire a full-time immigration attorney and bilingual legal advocate, more counselors, and other staff members to increase the range of services available at SARC.

At the same time, Caiazzo has recognized the high burnout level in the field and organized staff appreciation and team-building events, as well as annual retreats, to keep the staff energized. “A 2016 survey found that, compared to other nonprofits that participated in the survey, SARC’s culture is above average in the areas that indicate strong job satisfaction.”

In 2016, Caiazzo started Feedback Fridays, which encourages employees to provide anonymous suggestions to improve the work environment and services. “My efforts have focused on putting the tools in place so that each SARC employee can focus their energy on fulfilling the mission of the organization. Our greatest assets are our team members.”
