Dr. Sandra KurtinitisDr. Sandra Kurtinitis

Community College of Baltimore County

As President of the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), Dr. Sandra Kurtinitis sees herself as a “servant-leader.” With more than 50 years of experience in the community college sector, she believes “the classroom is a far more important place on campus than the executive office.”

This philosophy has helped steer CCBC, an institution that was once on the verge of instability — into a nationally-recognized community college. CCBC is now the largest provider of higher education in Maryland, serving some 63,000 diverse students annually. Kurtinitis helped raise $57.3 million to support students, programming, faculty and staff and secured more than $300 million in capital funds to aid in new construction and renovation of buildings.

“The impact President Kurtinitis has had on CCBC has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Dr. Richard Lilley, vice president of enrollment and student services at CCBC. “What’s more, her fierce passion for providing students of all ages, backgrounds and ability with the best education and training is not only strengthening our workforce, it is enriching our communities and changing lives.”

Through strong partnerships with legislators, business and community leaders, her advocacy for community colleges earned her the position of Chair for the American Association of Community Colleges board of trustees. She was also invited to the White House to witness President Donald Trump’s signing of the Pledge to the American Worker.

Even with her profound influence, Kurtinitis leads with a humble heart.

“Over the years, I have learned that holding the title of president does not automatically give you the authority, power or propensity for being a good leader. The real power comes from listening and being accountable to the people you serve,” she said.
