President & CEO
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
Brian Pieninck rose through the ranks of CareFirst in just three years through his ability to demonstrate outstanding business results to become president and CEO of Maryland’s largest health insurer.
Pieninck joined CareFirst in 2015 after a 19-year tenure serving on Aetna Inc.’s leadership team as executive vice president of CareFirst’s large group strategic business unit. There he was responsible for the service, sales and claims operations for the firm’s largest and most complex accounts. Under his leadership, the unit experienced its largest ever year-over-year enrollment growth.
In 2017, Pieninck was named chief operating officer, overseeing 4,000 employees and the business functions of CareFirst’s technology division and strategic business units. A little more than a year later, he was named to succeed Chet Burrell as CEO in May 2018. As CEO, Pieninck aims to continue the not-for-profit’s mission to improve community health, including exploring ways to lower health care costs for all Maryland residents.
“As the region’s largest not-for-profit health insurer, CareFirst is focused on making health care as accessible and affordable as possible for the communities we serve. With that mission in mind, we will continue to partner with our business and community leaders to identify solutions that impact the health of all Marylanders,” Pieninck said.
