Dr. Theresa Alban was first drawn to education through the belief that public education is the root of the country’s democracy and the great equalizer for every American. Her parents, who were children of the Depression, also spoke to her about the importance of getting an education. “It was a life-changing (discussion) for me and I just want to be able to give that to all children as well,” she said.

Since July 2011, Alban has served as Frederick County Public Schools’ superintendent, overseeing more than 5,600 employees and 40,000 students. In 2017, she was named Maryland Superintendent of the Year.
Alban is driven by “the fact that I am surrounded by people who share the same passion that I have for public education and wanting to do everything I can to support them so that we can create a better future for every student in our care.”

Alban enjoys “when I have the opportunity to interact with our students and our teachers in the schools.”

Her proudest accomplishment thus far at FCPS is the Linking Youth to New Experiences program at Frederick High School, which creates individualized plans for students to reach their academic and career goals.

“Public schools are an integral part of the community and as the leader of the public school system, my interaction throughout the community is important for our schools and for making the connections and building the relationships that ultimately build a better and stronger community in Frederick County,” Alban said.
