In her eight years as CEO of the Harford County Public Library, Mary Hastler has focused on ensuring that the library remains a key part of its community.

“My proudest accomplishment has been creating a reality that our library is cool and hip through innovative events, resources and services,” she said.

The library was an early adopter of e-resources and offers an extensive selection of e-books, e-movies, e-audiobooks, e-magazines and more, she said.

“We celebrate the physical item along with the digital formats and assist our customers in finding the perfect fit,” she said. “In addition, we offer certificate online classes through, Cisco Networking Academy, Rosetta Stone and other sites free to our customers.”

Hastler said her first library supervisor, a children’s department manager, was an inspiration.

“Not only do we find the answers for our customers, but we also teach how to find the answers. We welcome everyone and uphold privacy and intellectual freedom for all,” she said.

Hastler encourages more young people to pursue careers in public libraries because they are challenging and rewarding.

“You need to like people and have excellent customer service and communication skills,” she said. “In addition, you need to have a strong liking for technology and be able to embrace change with flexibility and enthusiasm.”
