Jeremy D. RachlinJeremy D. Rachlin was on track to become a counseling psychologist. He was majoring in psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park and had already taken the Graduate Record Examinations to go to graduate school on the subject.

During his senior year, he realized psychology was not a good fit for him. When he and his roommates had a dispute with an off campus landlord, he went to the school’s legal aid center. “They helped me solve (the issue) and I figured this might be a path I want to think about,” he said.

Rachlin would go on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland King Carey School of Law. “I find that a lot of the skills that you pick up and you have to learn in the counseling psychology practicum really carry over to the law” including empathy and listening to clients, he said. “It has actually been really helpful to have that background.”

A principal at Bulman, Dunie, Burke & Feld Chtd., Rachlin mainly handles estate and trust cases as well as litigation.

“I feel like I have found a practice and a type of practice where truly I can help people and that is all I ever wanted to do dating back to when I was set on being a counseling psychologist,” he said. “I really feel like I can help people.”

For 3 1/2 years until December, Rachlin as a contributor for The Daily Record’s Generation JD online blog. “I tried to strike a blend of practical advice with finding humor in what we see,” he said.

Rachlin is treasurer-elect of the Montgomery County Bar Association and serves on the University of Maryland Gemstone Program Alumni Board.

“I give my time to organizations that have connected with me and that have had an impact in my life and that I believe can be impactful to others,” he said.
