A state-owned switching railroad that serves the Port of Baltimore is the recipient of a federal grant announced Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration named Canton Railroad Co. a recipient of up to $1,184,147 in grant funds in a news release.

The funds are to be used for a project to replace 28 old switches on the railroad in an effort to reduce the risk of derailment.

The railroad is owned by the Maryland Transportation Authority. It connects with CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads.
