FREDERICK — Prosecutors in a Maryland county say a deadly altercation at a fair last week may have started over one dollar.

Frederick County State’s Attorney Charlie Smith provided more details Monday about the assault that resulted in the death of 59-year-old John Weed of Mount Airy at The Great Frederick Fair. Two teenage brothers have been charged with assault, and Smith says his office will pursue manslaughter charges.

According to The Frederick News-Post , Smith says a 16-year-old asked Weed for a dollar and then threw a punch to his head. Smith says about a minute passed before a 15-year-old ran at Weed and threw another punch.

The teens’ defense attorney said they were upset when they learned Weed had died.

A judge ruled Monday that the teens remain in custody until hearings next month.
