President and CEO
Columbia Association Inc.
After more than five years as president and CEO of the Columbia Association Inc., Milton Matthews said he remains focused on building and nurturing the relationship area residents have with his support organization.
“My job is just as much external as it is internal,” Matthews said. “So I’m out in the community … helping individuals understand the mission of the Columbia Association.”
Under his leadership, the private, nonprofit community services corporation which offers services, programs and activities for residents in Columbia and the greater Howard County area — has established a professional sales team to communicate the group’s mission and has implemented digital systems and tools for human resources and customer evaluations. The group recently renovated its Columbia Athletic Club and continues to improve its Supreme Sports Club.
In 2016, Columbia was named the No. 1 small city to live in America.
Matthews also serves as a member on a number of local boards: Columbia Association Inc., Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission, Downtown Columbia Partnership and Inner Arbor Trust, Howard County Chamber of Commerce, Howard County Spending Affordability Advisory Committee and Howard County Economic Development Authority since 2014.
Prior to his work in Columbia, Matthews worked as CEO of the Reston Association in Virginia. He has also worked for Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis as its vice president and chief financial officer.
Matthews holds a bachelor’s degree in government and history from Virginia Union University and has master’s degrees in city and regional planning from Ohio State University, and public administration from Syracuse University. He also holds a certificate in nonprofit organizational management from Villanova University.
