As executive director of Trash Free Maryland, Ashley Van Stone is tasked with promoting policies to prevent litter and keep the state clean.
Van Stone said the challenge is in identifying policies that are likely to have lasting success.
“Trash Free Maryland’s mission hinges on driving lasting change and that is only made possible when the policies and programs we’re advocating have broad support from the public and are sensible and viable long-term,” Van Stone said.
Trash Free Maryland’s partner and support network has nearly tripled since Van Stone took the helm in February of 2018. She said that’s the result of effective communications and programs along with intentional outreach and engagement.
“My approach to affecting change is to always ensure efficacy and the sustainability of those efforts to be maintained over time, and each successful program serves as a guidepost for individuals or organizations to see that change is both possible and powerful, building trust in both your process and purpose,” Van Stone said.
Van Stone was named a 2019 Birdland Community Hero by the Baltimore Orioles and received a Purple Crab Award for Advocacy from YNPN Baltimore in 2016.
