As a family law attorney, Emily Shank works to ensure her clients understand they are not alone. While she has received many accolades from high-ranking government officials such as Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot, Attorney General Brian Frosh and former Gov. Martin O’Malley, Shank says her biggest honor is the clients she serves.

“What gives me the greatest pride is the gratitude I’ve received from my clients. Like the client who cried with relief on my shoulder after we got a protective order against her abusive ex-husband, or the little girl who drew me a picture to thank me for advocating for her to live with a grandmother instead of an abusive mother,” Shank said.

She takes pride in the fact that she advocates fiercely, but maintains a gentle “bedside manner.”

After an unsuccessful run for state delegate in Carroll County, Shank opened up her own law firm focusing on family law. Shank is also a “Know Your Rights” trainer with the ACLU and regularly conducts an after-school training for kids ages 5 to 16 to educate them on their rights when interacting with police.
