BALTIMORE COUNTY — A police officer in Maryland is in jail and facing rape and assault charges, Baltimore County Police said Sunday.

Officer Anthony Michael Westerman, 25, was charged with two counts of second degree rape and three counts of second degree assault. Police did not provide details about Westerman’s alleged crimes.

Police Chief Melissa Hyatt said in a statement the allegations made in the case are “reprehensible.”

Police said Westerman joined the Baltimore County Police Department in 2015.

Hyatt said Westerman has been suspended without pay. He is being held at a local jail without bail, police said.

Court records do not identify any attorney currently representing Westerman.
