The Central Y in Maryland

hoey-john-headshot_july-2017Before he took over in 2006 as president and chief executive officer for the Baltimore-based Central Y in Maryland, John K. Hoey had served in a variety of executive positions for such organizations as Citigroup, Sylvan Learning and Laureate Education.

“I’ve spent 11 years in the for-profit education sector, during which I helped launch Laureate Education, which grew into the largest international higher education companies in the world,” he said. “I’ve worked in five industries, with a track record of building, growing and turning around organizations.”

Despite those achievements, Hoey says he’s most proud of his work with the Central Y in Maryland.

“I didn’t exactly know what I was getting myself into when I accepted this job in July of 2006,” he said. “But it’s been an immensely satisfying experience to lead an organization that has such a significant impact on young people, families and people of all ages, races and income levels.

“I turned around and grew the Y into one of the preeminent and largest community service organizations in Maryland,” he added. “We are leaders in early childhood, out-of-school time youth enrichment, community schools, mentoring, health and wellness, volunteerism and community strengthening.”

Hoey earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina in 1981 and his MBA from the State University of New York at Albany in 1983.

He is chairman of the board of visitors for the University of South Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences, as well as a board member for the Business Volunteers Maryland and chairman of the board for the University of Saint Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, Florida.
