palomino-pedro-aAs an immigrant, Pedro Palomino knows firsthand how daunting being in a new country can be. When his eldest son turned 16, he migrated from Peru to the United States to ensure his son received a good college education. He found that transitioning to the U.S. system was difficult, however, and was forced to take laborer jobs, despite being a trained professional sports journalist. He persevered through construction jobs, dishwashing jobs, and office cleaning jobs, anything he could find to make ends meet. All the while, he founded, a news and information site for the Baltimore Hispanic community.

Since 2009, the site evolved from a resource of local events to a full news site, providing relevant information, resources and news for the Hispanic community. Four years after founding Somos, Palomino secured funding to purchase Mundo Latino, and left his factory job to work the publications full time. Since then, Palomino works alongside many of the nonprofits that assisted him when he first arrived in the U.S., like CASA de Maryland.

He was recognized as Outstanding Professional of the Year in 2013 and Outstanding Business of the Year Award in 2018 by the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Palomino has also been the recipient of a Governor’s Citation in 2014 and 2019 for his work with the Hispanic community.

“’Cuando estes subiendo, dale la mano a los que rodean porque cuando de caigas esas mano te ayudarran a sosternerte. This is my favorite quote in Spanish which says, ‘When you are going up, give a hand to those around you because when you fall those hands will help hold you,’ ” Palomino said.

This is a winner profile from The Daily Record's 2020 Influential Marylanders awards.
