Ports America Chesapeake, terminal operator of the Port of Baltimore’s Seagirt Marine Terminal, began on-dock intermodal rail service operations at the terminal Tuesday with the expansion of its partnership with Norfolk Southern Corporation.
The new on-dock loading will offer enhanced services for Norfolk Southern’s international customers, shifting its international intermodal business from its Bay View yard operation to Seagirt Marine Terminal.
For Port of Baltimore, which handled a record-breaking 43.6 million tons of international cargo in 2019, and Seagirt Marine Terminal, the new service will support the on-going growth of the port.
Norfolk Southern is a major transporter of industrial products, including chemicals, agriculture, metals and construction materials and is a principal carrier of coal, automobiles, and automotive parts. The railway company operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East, including 233 miles of track operated throughout Maryland.
