Christopher Stevenson’s most significant professional accomplishment involves his drafting and assisting in the passage of a bill by the Prince George’s County Council to help what are known as returning citizens.
These are folks returning to regular life following incarceration. As a director of public policy, Stevenson, 29, drafted a bill that allows top county officials and community leaders to work together to tackle the plight of returning citizens.
The Prince George’s County Re-entry Advisory Board will be tasked with examining the obstacles and problems of returning citizens, whose numbers are expected to rise from 2020 to 2022.
He’s also a member of the Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee. Stevenson works with a variety of nonprofits and local, state and national partners to address community needs.
This work has included feeding the homeless and establishing a toiletries drive for the homeless during the pandemic. He also sponsored a community check-in to inform residents in the 24th legislative district about what their local school board members and state officials are doing during COVID-19 and led a Black Lives Matter protest from Glenarden to FedEx Field.
“I do not have a specific recipe to my success,” he said, aside from his ongoing passion and willingness to help his community. “I don’t wait for a problem to arise in my community, rather I go try to find a solution to prevent another community need from occurring.”
A 2009 graduate of George Washington University with a master’s degree in public administration, Stevenson has served in several other legislative roles, including as state legislative liaison for state Sen. Joanne Benson, D-{romce George’s, deputy director of policy and legislation for the League of United Latin American Citizens and political strategist for Del. Keith Haynes.
He’s also a member of the NAACP, the 202 Coalition, Kappa Alpha Psi and Pi Alpha Alpha.
