Maureen Cook strongly believes in the power of mentorship as she has seen the benefits of surrounding yourself with strong, wise and humble leaders.
“I believe that it is important to surround yourself with people who have gone before you, to learn from them by seeking advice and counsel, to hear their stories of both failures and successes and to walk alongside them, both professionally and personally,” she said. “… In turn, I believe it is important to seek out the next generation and invest in them by sharing the wisdom and knowledge that I have applied and learned in my own life.”
Born in Annapolis, Cook began working for KCW Engineering Technologies Inc. in a part-time, temporary position at age 19 and quickly earned a full-time job as an administrative assistant in the accounting department. By surrounding herself with personal and professional mentors, Cook has risen through the Glen Burnie-based company working as a billing specialist, lead billing specialist and her current position as billing manager.
“With my passion for the people around me, I was grateful my managers saw me as a leader and entrusted me to train and support many members of our team,” she said. “I continue to view this role (billing manager) as an honor.”
For the past eight years, Cook has served as a leader in her church’s youth group.
“I believe in the importance of investing in the next generation, helping to raise up strong leaders, workers and members of society,” she said. “As a leader, my role goes beyond supporting my students through Bible studies twice a week and weeklong summer camps each year but through quality time.”
She will often take a student out for lunch to discuss and share their dreams, challenges and hopes. “I can support and guide them in these efforts,” Cook said.
