When she was 18, thanks to a quality school system, she was on her way to college. At the same time, a male cousin who was the same age and lived only a few minutes away — but in a different school district — was on his way to the state penitentiary.
Her experiences have inspired Coleman in her 15 years in the education business, most of it in Baltimore, as a teacher and administrator.
“I am driven by the belief that a strong public education system is the foundation for the success and livelihood of our young people and that all children deserve a high-quality, equitable education, regardless of their background,” she said.
A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, who earned her master’s in teaching from Johns Hopkins University in 2007, Coleman is most proud of creating the nonprofit B More Global, which has helped 72 students enjoy what she calls the “life-changing experience” of travel abroad.
“I have devoted my career to working to educate and empower our most vulnerable and underserved communities,” she said.
