What have you had to change during the past year to make sure you were still “serving” even if the approach had to change?

Service to others is who I am. It is how I was raised by my parents. During this surreal moment in our collective lives, my family’s commitment to philanthropy – our love for people and the community in which we live – is stronger than ever. This is a moment of reflection for all of us — as organizations and as individuals. It’s an opportunity to build long-term solutions to do better, to be better and to impact more.

The past year has not only been challenging with COVID but we have also faced race and discrimination challenges and realities as a state and a country. How do you establish a strategy for diversity, equity and inclusion in your organization and how do you use your influential voice to help others understand the importance?

DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, access) must penetrate all facets of society. Organizations must evaluate the composition of their leadership, staff, trustees, clients and vendors. DEAI is about access to health care, to jobs, to food, to housing – basic human rights for everyone. We cannot thrive if anyone is left out of a quality life.
