Being open, honest, transparent and continuing to lead by example has become the most effective management style for Jessica Tiller during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“No one had all the answers, but we were doing our best and trying to reassure, particularly younger members of the team, that we will get through this,” she said.

As partner at Pugh & Tiller PR, she helps businesses and nonprofits reach their desired audiences so they may achieve their communication and market goals.

Aft er graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communications/public relations from Salisbury University, Tiller joined Stanton Communications as an entry-level account coordinator. Over seven years, she would rise through the fi rm to the title of vice president. In 2008, during the Great Recession, Tiller co-founded and served as executive vice president of Weiss PR.

She co-founded Pugh & Tiller PR in January 2020 specializing in five key industries: commercial real estate/architecture engineering construction; professional services; health care and employee benefits; nonprofit and trade associations; and technology. While navigating the current pandemic, Tiller noted, “I used (the Great Recession) experience to remind myself that we would be able to overcome whatever challenges were in our future.”

Tiller says she has had several people in her life that have made an impact, including two friends who passed away in their 30s and Ray Weiss, who serves as senior counsel at her firm.

“To honor them and their lives, I’ve wanted to carry on what they started and be a positive force in the world,” she said. “We’re all given one shot, some are here longer than others but I deeply want to have a positive impact.”
