President and CEO
T. Rowe Price

William Stromberg is nothing if not a local guy who made good.

A graduate of Loyola Blakefield, a Catholic college preparatory school in Towson, he earned his bachelor’s degree at Johns Hopkins University in 1982 – where he played baseball and football so well he later was inducted into the Johns Hopkins Hall of Fame and played briefly with the Philadelphia Eagles.

After earning his MBA at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, Stromberg went to work as an equity analyst at T. Rowe Price in 1987. After a series of promotions, he was named president and CEO of the Baltimore-based company in 2016.

The pandemic, Stromberg said, demanded more from everyone. As a manager, it was important to emphasize three key things: remain empathetic, given the difficult circumstances facing so many people; stay intensely focused on delivering for clients; and “develop new capabilities to ensure we can remain competitive over the long term in an industry that is also going through a period of intense changes.”

Stromberg became aware he could be a change-maker some 25 years ago when he was asked to take a formal leadership role with T. Rowe Price by his boss at the time, Jim Kennedy.

“The transition from ‘managing money’ to ‘managing the people who manage the money’ was challenging but the ability to make a difference was huge and ultimately led to my being CEO,” Stromberg recalled. “One never knows where opportunities will lead. Thank you, Jim.”

Stromberg said he has had many good role models, starting with his parents — “who instilled in me a strong set of personal values” — and including various coaches, teammates and leaders at T. Rowe Price.
