President and CEO
Maryland Hospital Association
Since 2018, Bob Atlas has served as the president and CEO of the Elkridge-based Maryland Hospital Association (MHA), the statewide advocacy organization that focuses on improving health care and health for all Maryland residents.
Atlas has extensive professional expertise in health policy and the business of health care. Before joining the MHA, Atlas served as the president of health care consultancy for EBG Advisors, where he joined forces with Maryland officials to integrate care for Maryland residents eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. He was also an independent adviser on Medicaid reform to the Secretary of Health of North Carolina and Human Services.
When COVID-19 hit, Atlas and his team worked with member hospitals to obtain personal protection equipment and address any other needs health care workers and hospitals required. This also included, at times, securing solutions for child care for health care workers and ensuring that mass transit or other transportation options were available to them.
In June, participating Maryland hospitals, through the auspices of MHA, made a decision to require all employees and clinical team members to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
In a press release, Atlas said, “this consensus demonstrates hospitals’ commitment to caring for their communities and fulfills their promise to put patients first.”
Atlas has helped shape the strong union within the hospital community and believes that COVID-19 has only reinforced their bond.
“We’re very proud of the strength that we exhibited, the bravery that was displayed, overcoming tremendous hurdles, and the hope that was created by health care workers and by hospitals,” Atlas said in an interview with Maryland Matters.
