President, Greater Maryland Market
Bank of America
Janet Currie was named president of Bank of America Greater Maryland earlier this year, nearly three decades after joining the company in 1993. Previously, she had served in a variety of leadership positions in wealth management, consumer banking, operations and business control.
Currie earned her master’s degree from the New York University School of Business and is treasurer of the board of the Horizon Foundation, Howard County’s community health foundation.
Asked when during her career she realized she could become an influential person, Currie said everyone can be influential.
“While position helps, the real power comes in recognizing you have a voice and being willing to use it,” she said. “For most of my career, I’ve worked for Bank of America, an employer that encourages the use of your voice.
“As a young banker, I was called upon to share my thoughts and help shape outcomes. We still encourage this at all levels throughout the organization.”
During the pandemic, Currie said, she has had the responsibility of deploying Bank of America’s resources to address social concerns and strengthen economic opportunities. To do so, she said, the organization partnered with organizations such as the Franciscan Center, Maryland Food Bank and Healthcare for the Homeless, and donated 280,000 masks, 1,150 bottles of hand sanitizer and 100,000 gloves to local groups.
Asked who has influenced her to be a leader, she said the list was too long to name everyone. But she cited her mother as having the most influence on her, “through her fearlessness, faith and wisdom.”
