Michael D. Hankin
As president and CEO of Brown Advisory, the independent investment management firm based in Baltimore, Mike Hankin takes his position as a leader seriously.
Hankin recalled giving a TED Talk a few years ago that he called, “Speak Up. Where it Counts. Loudly,” inspired in part by the gathering of white supremacists in Charlottesville.
“My point was that it was incumbent on leaders, beyond the sphere of politics, to speak up on the issues that were impacting the fabric of our society,” he said. “From then on, I have tried to double down on my efforts to be visible and vocal on issues that matter to our clients, colleagues and communities in a way that doesn’t necessarily push a narrative, but instead invites progressive conversations.”
The pandemic was a challenge for his firm and his clients, Hankin said.
“The unprecedented challenges that our clients, colleagues and communities have faced over the last 15 months motivated all of us at Brown Advisory to try to understand how each other were doing by getting in their shoes and letting them know we care,” Hankin said.
“We have been communicating with clients with greater frequency and transparency and have continued to gather as a full firm four times a week to help reinforce a sense of connectedness and community that can be easily lost in a fully remote working environment.”
Harkin earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emory University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and, in 1982, his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
Among other local activities, he is chairman of the Baltimore Healthy Harbor Project and a trustee of Johns Hopkins University.
