Senior Director of Resource Development
The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region
Just as many nonprofit organizations were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region was no exception. But Sara Garbarino, senior director of resource development for The Arc, coordinated a record-breaking fundraising gala for 2020, despite all the setbacks COVID-19 served.
“This event was held at a time where several of our agency’s programs were temporarily closed, future revenue was uncertain, and there was an increase in costs in our Community Living (residential) program, PPE and salary incentives (enhanced and hazard pay) in order to ensure quality staffing was provided to the people we support. Being able to increase funds raised during this event was crucial to helping financially support the organization during this extremely challenging time, and it is something I am very proud to have accomplished,” said Garbarino.
The entire event was held virtually, and Garbarino and her team learned new technical skills and creative ways to engage donors online. Garbarino credits much of her success to her enthusiasm, positivity and sense of humor.
“People feed off enthusiasm and positivity, and I have found they have played huge roles in motivating team members and myself to tackle a project and implement a new strategy or vision,” she said.
Garbarino launched a new volunteer program at her agency and to date has recruited more than 160 volunteers. In addition to leading her team at The Arc NCR, Garbarino sits on the board of the Chesapeake Professional Women’s Network, the Harford Leadership Academy and the Social Justice Committee of The Arc NCR.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Towson University and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Baltimore.
